Archive Research in the Czech Republic

Archive Research in the Czech Republic

Professional on-site archive research for genealogy, family history, property records and historical documents throughout the Czech Republic.

Not Everything Is Available Online

While many Czech parish registers have been digitised, a significant amount of valuable historical material still exists only in physical archives. Land registers, municipal records, school files, probate documents, historical maps and many other sources often require personal archive visits and specialised research experience.

I regularly conduct archive research throughout the Czech Republic, helping clients uncover historical records that cannot be accessed remotely.

What I Research

Genealogy Records

Research using parish registers, civil records, census returns and other historical sources to reconstruct family histories and trace ancestral lines across the Czech Republic. Depending on the time period and locality, additional archival collections may also provide valuable insights into your ancestors’ lives.

Property & House History

Research into historical property ownership using land registers, cadastral records and other archival sources. This can often help identify ancestral homes, trace ownership over generations and better understand the history of a family’s property.

Historical Documents

Research in municipal archives, probate records, school registers, military collections and other historical documents that provide valuable context beyond standard genealogy research.

Security & Modern History Records

Research in the Security Services Archive (ABS) and other modern historical collections, including post-war records, military files and police records, where legally accessible. These sources are particularly valuable for researching 20th-century family history.

Historical Maps & Cadastral Research

By combining historical maps, cadastral records and land registers, I can often identify ancestral homes, reconstruct historic properties and trace changes in villages and landscapes over time. Whenever possible, historical maps are compared with present-day aerial imagery to help clients visualise exactly where their ancestors lived.

Custom Archive Research

Every archive project is unique. I also undertake bespoke research tailored to individual enquiries, including museums, church archives, specialised collections and other historical repositories throughout the Czech Republic.

Why Work With a Professional Archive Researcher?

Archive research is about much more than locating documents. Historical records are often scattered across different institutions, written in several languages and scripts, and require experience to interpret correctly.

My work combines archival research with genealogy, historical context and local expertise to help transform individual documents into meaningful family stories.

Most Popular Questions

Can you visit Czech archives on my behalf?

Yes. I regularly visit archives throughout the Czech Republic on behalf of clients. After identifying the relevant archive, I arrange a research appointment, conduct the research in person and examine the original records in the archive’s reading room.

Can you obtain copies of historical documents?

Yes. Whenever permitted, I photograph archival documents during my visit. Some archives also offer certified copies bearing an official stamp, which can usually be requested for an additional archival fee.

What if the records haven’t been digitised?

Many valuable records are still available only in physical form. I can locate the relevant collection, determine which archive holds it and conduct the research on-site, allowing access to records that cannot be viewed online.

Can you research house histories?

Yes. House history research often combines land registers, cadastral records, historical maps and other archival sources to trace property ownership and identify the history of a particular building or family home.

Can you research military records?

Yes. Depending on the time period and the surviving records, military service records can often provide valuable information about an ancestor’s service, residence and personal history.

How long does archive research take?

The timeframe depends on several factors, including the archive’s availability, the time required to access the records and the complexity of the research. Once I have reviewed your enquiry, I’ll provide an estimated timeframe before the research begins.

Can you photograph archival material?

Yes. Whenever archive regulations permit, I photograph original documents during my research and include the digital images as part of the final research materials.

What if the archive has no records?

The only way to know for certain is often to investigate the archive in person. If no relevant records survive, I will explain the findings and, whenever possible, recommend alternative sources or archives that may help continue the research.

How much does archive research cost?

Archive research is tailored to the complexity of each project. Please visit the Pricing page for general information, or contact me for a personalised quotation based on your research requirements.

Can You Research Municipal Archives?

Yes.

Municipal archives often preserve records that cannot be found elsewhere, including local council documents, building records, school registers, photographs, business records and other historical materials. Depending on the town or village and the period being researched, these collections can provide valuable information that complements traditional genealogy research.

Do You Work With Land Records?

Yes.

Land records are one of the most valuable sources for researching the history of a property and its owners. They can help trace ownership over several generations, identify inheritance patterns and provide insights into the social and economic history of a family.

Land records are frequently used alongside parish registers and cadastral maps to build a more complete picture of a family’s past.

Can You Research Cadastral Maps?

Absolutely.

Historical cadastral maps are invaluable for locating ancestral homes, understanding historical village layouts and comparing past landscapes with the present day. By combining cadastral maps with land registers and parish records, it is often possible to identify the exact location where your ancestors lived.

Whenever possible, I also compare historical maps with modern aerial imagery to help clients visualise their family’s historical landscape.
